Customer Reviews

Fantastically designed product with excellent customer serviceMy four year old has been a thumb sucker since birth. Recently she decided that she WANTS to stop, but was unable to break the habit with positive reinforcement alone. We tried nail polish (yuck!) but the sour taste was not enough of a deterrent, so I ordered the aerothumb. The first few days went smoothly, but nights were extremely difficult. She cried because she wanted to suck her thumb, but she didn't want to give up trying.By day 4 she was putting the guard on herself after bath time. By two weeks we could 'forget' the guard for extended periods and she wouldn't attempt to suck her thumb. Unfortunately some illnesses and big life changes came along right about when she discovered that her thumb was double jointed and easy to slip out.The company has been very helpful in finding a solution and offering tips and tricks. We are about to try round two with a smaller guard. (She is over the weight limit for small, but the medium gives her a little too much wriggle room.)My advice is, start when you have a little extra time to give some special attention and positive reinforcement. It is also helpful to mark the correct hole on all the wrist bands so you are not guessing which one fits best!Take a leap, try it! It sure beats getting a semi-permanent guard from the dentist. 5Best product out there (...and we've tried them all!)Great Product! My little girl turned four and was still sucking her thumb. The dentist mentioned this guard so we gave it a go (have tried everything else so why not!). This thing is fantastic! Came with a small chart where they add a star for each thumbless day. At the end she was done sucking her thumb for good! She is so proud of all of her work, and it really was pretty painless. She also enjoyed choosing a new color band each time it was taken off. Buy lots of bands because you need to change it after each hand washing, art project, snack, etc... It did occasionally cause some redness and irritation until her body got acclimated to the guard. When that happened we just put a self stick ace bandage under for a day or so to give her skin a break. 5Baby TrichatilliamniaI should start by saying I had a 3.5 year old with full on baby Trichotillomania (hair pulling) and was almost completely bald. I really wanted her to have some hair, she got called a boy, baby and cancer patient so often her and I would often have our feelings hurt. Her therapist said that her hair pulling was tied to her thumb sucking, so if we could nip the thumb sucking then the pulling would stop so we set out on the journey of trying everything! She was found sucking her thumb in utero and had sucking blisters on her hands when she was born. I knew it was not going to be easy. We tried lemon, hot sauce, nail polish, band-aids, tape, gloves none of it worked. I had almost given up hope when I found these. There are others but the bad reviews had me convinced that I shouldn't skimp and go for the cheaper one, i should go for the proven one and boy I was NOT disappointed. She chewed on it a bit which it held up to though it did get a little discolored when she ate spaghetti and used her hands a bit. the rubbing did cause her some irritation but we put medical tape over the spots it rubber her and it was fine after. She wore it for 2 months and we were scared to take them off. She seemed fully broken and actually had short hair which I was beyond thrilled about. for a month after we still used them on her at night. for that period we fashioned some velcro straps that were meant for tying up cords at reusable straps so we could easily take them on and off and she wouldn't bother with them because she had been used to wearing them for 2 months. We are now 1 month post taking off the brace and she hasn't sucked at all and the baby Trichatilliamnia seems to be gone because she has a short boys hair do now and I'm so happy! so worth the money in my opinion. 5Works great, highly recommend! We bought this for our almost 10 year old, who just couldn t break her thumb sucking habit. She was ready to try though, so we bit the bullet and bought this thumb guard. We were hesitant for a while, due to the cost, but I have to say we are impressed with how well it has worked. She wore it all day for the first couple days, because she had a habit of sucking her thumb whenever she was relaxing, reading, or watching tv. But now she only needs to wear it at night. We are planning to use it for two months, and then see if she needs it longer. I think by then she will have broken the habit for good. I highly recommend this for helping break the thumb sucking habit, but I would recommend preparing them mentally ahead of time to help ease the transition. 5This really works! After reading the reviews of other thumb sucking deterrents, we started with the TGuard. We didn't even try the nail polish, since our 2 1/2 year old goes to daycare and washes his hands multiple times a day. I'll admit, I was skeptical. And these are expensive, especially since you need two. Don't fool yourself into thinking one is enough. Our boy exclusively sucked his right thumb until he had a TGuard on it, then he quickly switched to his left. So if you're going to go this route, go ahead and get yourself one for each hand. The hardest part is the first week. Our boy would wake up in the night and didn't know how to self soothe without sucking his thumb, so we'd have to go in and help calm him down. But children learn so fast and he got past that point quickly. Because he's in daycare and they nap at daycare, we decided to keep the TGuards on all day and only took them off for dinner and bath time. It got to the point where he didn't want to take his "gloves" off! He liked them on and they didn't seem to bother him. But even though he liked them, putting them on could be challenging, mostly because he's a 2 year old. They're actually very simple to put on, so long as you're not wrangling an alligator. We went the full 45 days of wear before stopping and haven't seen him even put his fingers near his mouth in weeks. We opted to do weekly prizes for wearing his gloves, since that gave him incentive to put them back on, but that's up to you. (Remember, if you wear your gloves, you'll get a Buzz Lightyear! LOL) As a final reward, we went to the zoo :) And now we have a happy toddler who no longer sucks his thumb! 5Effective, with drawbacksI have mixed feelings about the thumb guard. Ultimately, it has seemed to be effective and for that I would give it 5 stars. The draw backs were severe enough, however, that I have to deduct 1 star and elaborate. First, the plastic bands that secure the guard in place are very durable and can't be ripped off, which is great for keeping children from removing the guard. The downside to this is that the plastic is constantly rubbing the child's wrist in the same spot, day after day, and created a lot of irritation on my daughter's wrist. She ended up with blisters and raw spots from the band rubbing in the same spots over and over. I had to start putting bandaids on her wrist first before securing the band in place. 2nd, even with washing with soap and water, the guard changed colors and began to look unhygienic and even carry a slight odor that I couldn't get to go away no matter how I tried. 3rd, my daughter stopped sucking her thumb but began chewing on the plastic guard instead. The top of the guard is pretty rough from her chewing in it instead of sucking her thumb. She wore the guard for 30 days and though I worried about how she would do with it, she did a pretty good job of understanding the purpose it serves and why she needed it. We just took it off and left it off for the first time 2 days ago and she hasn't sucked her thumb once since then. She also really enjoyed the star chart that came with it and is looking forward to the reward she chose. All in all, it seems to have been effective, but at the expense of putting my daughter through some pain where the skin was rubbed away on her wrist. Invest in some gauze or wrapping to protect your child's wrist before securing the band in place and you should be fine. 4I can t say enough good things about this productI can t say enough good things about this product!! We bought a large for my almost 8 year old! He was a notorious thumb sucker and I was trying EVERYTHING to get him to stop. The nail polish didn t work, hot sauce, or showers every time I caught him (what worked for me as a child)! I am so glad and thankful to say that he is on day 33 of no thumbsucking!! The first night or two was a little rough, but after that he was more than willing. I wish I would have bought this sooner!! We are going to go the full days, so he can fill up the stars on the sky. 5Rubs skin, can still get it off, and prohibits fine motor skillsWe've been using TWO of these at $120 bucks for over 3 weeks and she still sucks her thumb. She can take it off while in the car. While wearing these deters her, and she sucks her thumb significantly less, she can barely use her thumb during preschool and she is still sucking her thumb. How long does she have to wear it before it works? she's already forgotten how to use her thumbs, poking with her other fingers to pick things up. I was willing to make her go through it for a few weeks, but now that it hasn't worked I just don't know how much longer I can bare it. She needs a guard that's much more comfortable and still doesn't come off. Very disappointed.I've tried yucky nail polish, these, and cloth gloves. Nothing works. :-( 1Stop thumb sucking and empty your wallet in just one purchase. This thumb guard is amazing. Works incredibly well to stop the suction. I'll save you the trouble and *highly* suggest you buy two: one for each thumb. My daughter sucked her thumb since two months of age--always the same thumb with zero interest in the other. She had NO problem switching to the opposite thumb once her preferred was "locked up" from this guard.Would happily give this five stars but the price is insanely high for what you get. The price point is way off. But they don't care because it's the only thing that actually works. Oh, and the little red piece that locks the two "straps" together? Don't you dare lose it, or let an unknowing older sibling cut it in the process of removing the wristband for little sister...it costs $4 for ONE!We tried hot sauce (don't judge), the nail paint, gloves, and tape. Nothing worked; they all seemed to serve as delightful little game for our 3-year old. This works.Comfort level is great. Soft silicone, easy to clean, easy to adjust. Kids can still use their thumb with these on. Lastly, just get the AeroThumb, don't bother with the classic. 4
