Very ordinary coffee...I have to say, I really was hoping that I would like this more than I did. I bought this because I was running out of coffee and so I was in a pinch. I usually buy coffee from one of three places (to give you an idea of what I drink): Caffe Vita, Seven Coffee Roasters, and Passenger. I was not expecting this coffee to be at the level of single origin fancy coffee. However, this was still quite disappointing. First, the package that I received is clearly old. The "best before" date on the package is in two months. The other Kicking Horse coffee that I bought to taste at the same time as this one (the 454) had a best before date that was in two years. I am assuming that this bag was very old (why oh why can't roasters put the roasting date on the package?!?!?!). Now about the coffee - it tastes, well, like coffee. What I mean by that is that it is very ordinary and undistinctive. I know that tastes differ significantly, especially when it comes to coffee, but the roast on this just masks all of the flavors of the coffee - and this is supposed to be the medium roast! Starbucks has much better coffee (and I hate Starbucks!) for a similar price. I would avoid this brand altogether.2Store it well! This is a VERY nice coffee. I do like the whole bean, "grind it yourself" freshness and the marketing is adorable. But I will tell you right now, have somewhere airtight and cool to store your coffee beans. a ziplock simply won't do; I missed out on the last couple of servings because it went stale.Overall, the roast was great and the beans were of good quality. I think the price is fair, the product is top-shelf, and I do regularly recommend this to people looking for a new or different brand to try. Good job, people!4Not a coffee snob, but it's good stuff! Using it for lattes and mochas.I'm certainly not a coffee connoisseur. I've been trying to find my favorite bean for morning lattes and mochas ever since upgrading to a "real" espresso machine, a Lelit Mara, earlier this year. I've gone through a small handful of beans so far, and this Smart Ass coffee is among the best. I normally go for a bean from a local roaster but if it isn't conveniently available (I live pretty rurally and it's often easier to order from Amazon than it is to go to "town") I'll get adventurous and try some new stuff. Kicking Horse seemed well reviewed so I gave it a chance and the Smart Ass seemed to be the most like my preferred flavor profile. It's a solid medium roast so it's not bitter or earthy. It's what I might call "balanced"; it's bright and a bit chocolaty. It's not subtle and it's not aggressive. It's just a really nice smooth middle-of-the-road taste. I might try some others from these guys. I only recently learned that Kicking Horse's parent company is Lavazza, a hugely popular Italian coffee company. What this means for their beans and product, I don't know, but Kicking Horse isn't the small company it might appear to be. Still, it's good stuff, a bit on the expensive side but it's organic and fair-trade. I'd buy it again. In fact I'll probably do that now, I just remembered I emptied the last of the bag.4Very dry beans, aroma-less and bitter coffeeDue to all the positive reviews, I was really excited about trying this coffee. When it arrived, the first thing I noticed was that the package was nearly odorless. I hoped that had to do with the packaging, but I've always been able to smell coffee very clearly through bags like this that haven't been opened.Upon opening the bag, however, there was still only a very faint aroma. I also noticed the coffee beans seemed very dry - not oily at all, and some looked burnt. I went ahead and brewed some coffee nonetheless - with hopes it would still be good. But it wasn't. It tasted very bitter and with no other significant flavor. I don't know if I got a bad batch, or if this is the norm -- but I'm afraid I'm done with this brand.1Absolutely no coffee flavor. It tasted like dirt.I was expecting this coffee to be amazing after reading many positive reviews. I had recently bought a new Bodum pour over coffee maker and a Bodum burr grinder for the beans. I got the coffee and waited two days for the beans in the grinder to be used up and then added the Kicking Horse Smart Ass beans. I was so disappointed that after about half of a cup of coffee, I poured it out, dumped the beans out of the grinder and used fresh beans from my local coffee roaster. This coffee wasn't cheap and I was very disappointed! It wasn't just a flavor I didn't like; it didn't even taste like coffee! It just tasted like a cup of dirt and as a gardener, I know what dirt on your tongue tastes like! I wonder if these beans got shoved to the back and the bag was over six months old or something. Very perplexing after all of the reviews that gave it such high praise. I threw the rest of the bag away. Save your money.1Just an average cup of joeFlavor: Smart A$$ Whole BeanBought this coffee after reading the high praise it received in the review section. I said "why not?" and gave it a shot. Ground the beans fresh and brewed a cup. Now everyone has their own preferences when it comes to flavor and intensity, and no one understands that better than I, so take this review with a grain of salt. However, when it comes to my personal preference, this coffee simply did not meet my standards. I tried it both black, which is how I prefer my morning brew, and with sugar.I will give credit where credit is due. Upon opening the bag and smelling the beans, as well as right after grinding them, the smell was lovely. It only made me more excited to brew a fresh cup. However, after brewing said cup, the aroma was entirely gone. It barely smelled of anything. Not good or bad, just there. Unfortunately, the taste is exactly the same. Its not a bad cup of coffee, but it certainly isn't a great one either. No real flavors coming through as you'd expect with a medium roast. Perhaps I got a bad batch, but I would not recommend this coffee if you enjoy the subtleties of a fresh cup of coffee. After adding some sugar, it is slightly better, but then again, what isn't better with a little bit of sugar.3Great CoffeeSmart Ass has become my house coffee. My personal favorite is a single origin from Oregon, but that is too expensive for me for regular use. This medium roast African/South/Central American blend is perfect for a house coffee since it works well with sugar/cream as well as black, and satisfies those who like a traditional coffee. The price is good, its organic, and while not local (Canada), it fits my budget. I have also tried the KH Three Sisters blend and their Dark roast. Both are good for those times when you want a more smoky deep flavor. They do not over roast their dark roasts. I only do pour over anymore and all these satisfy. The coffee comes in a timely manner and is always fresh.4Great medium roast coffeeWe really like the smart ass coffee it has smooth drink ability and good overall flavor. We are on a journey to find good tasting organic coffee so we are trying many different brands and this is one is going to stay on our list of likes. We will be buying more of this product in the future, after we try more of the coffee in our coffee list on Amazon so we can find the best ones we like. The smart ass coffee particularly reminds me of Don Pablo's subtle Earth coffee, it must be the blind of the beans that has a similar taste and drink ability to this product.5I DON'T THINK SOI consider myself a cofee connoisseur, even buying green beans, in the past, and roasting the beans myself. The promises for this particular one were definitely not forth coming. I have tried three bags of this; one from Amazon, and one each from our local health food store and Albertsons. I'm sure no one would disagree that is a fair trial. All 5 coffee drinkers, in this household, had the same opinion. Every single bag resulted in sour coffee. I can only think that the sour taste is from under roasting or a crap shoot of rotten coffee beans. I would have tried re-roasting the beans, but most of the family does not like the mess, the smell and, for some, headaches. So, unfortunately, I could not take the experiment to the next level. I will not buy this again. If anyone is interested in this particular brand of coffee, try their "Three Sisters." It's much better.2Oily beans with a disappointing flavorFelt just as satisfied with the grocery store beans. The beans are very oily in the packaging and was hopeful that it would provide a more fresh flavor but it failed for me. I tried everything from standard amount to double amount of grounds and not a whole much of difference. The biggest disappointment is I fell for the marketing. Kicking Horse just gives the sound of a powerful clip of coffee but I m doubtful if the caffeine content is any higher than a K-cup. I get it... the caffeine is relative to the brew. I m just saying, don t fall for the marketing. If you want a kick in the morning, go espresso.2
