Add less waterI've been trying these vegetarian Backpacker's Pantry items. The Louisiana Beans and Rice is pretty good. However, do not add the 2.5 cups of boiling hot water on the instructions. After waiting 20 minutes, I opened the package to find a stew. It's tasty but I'd rather eat beans and rice, not soupy beans and rice. Anyway, to kick it up a notch, I added some hot sauce and it really did taste better. Give it a try but only add 2 cups of water. If you want animal protein, add some chicken meat, either a foil packet or dehydrated (if using dehydrated or freeze dried, adjust water amount accordingly). 4Good stuff, not terribly authentic but still yummuThis is my first Backpackers Pantry entree and it was very tasty! I eat these at home for an easy weeknight meal starter and these trail foods really fit the bill. The flavor is excellent, a nice kick to it, not too salty, a really nice broth (depending on how much water you use) but you definitely need to let it cook longer than 20 minutes. It stays warm as long as you don t unzip the ziplock. There s enough food for two people if supplemented with some veg or crackers. If you re starving you can eat the whole thing without feeling overstuffed. It s a healthy meal and if you have some sausage crumbles or fresh to cook that would really take it to a five-star entree. As is it s looking for meat in my opinion but works if you re vegan or vegetarian. Will definitely order again! 4good tasteTried these to see if they would be a good item for our emergency pantry. Being from Louisiana, I have high expectations for red beans and rice. I was pleasantly surprised. Nicely seasoned. We like things really spicy so we added some Tabasco sauce but good even without the Tabasco. 5Great QualityExpiration: 2042. By far this is my favorite meal made by Backpacker's Pantry. I usually sample what I intend to store, and I get the single serving meals before I buy #10 cans for long term storage. I rate the quality as the highest available, and I've used just about every kind out there to date. 5Let it simmer in the bag for more than the directions stateI purchased the Backpacker's Pantry - Louisiana Red Beans and Rice dehydrated meal nearly a year ago and decided to test it out in the kitchen. After measuring the appropriate about of water, resealing the ziplock pouch, and letting it sit for the directed amount of time (plus squeezing/shaking/agitating the pouch to stir it all up), I opened up the pouch, stirred it with a spoon, and sampled it...1) a significant portion of the still needed to soak up more water. Luckily there seemed to be plenty of water remaining.2) I let decided to let it sit for an additional 10 minutes, as well as continue to squeeze/shake/agitate the pouch to further mix it up.3) I noticed an odd "plastic" smell. I am not sure if it was from some of the spice ingredients of the meal, or if it was due to hot water's affect on the plastic pouch liner. Many experts suggest NOT introducing plastic food/drink containers to high heats, so take that into consideration. Then I opened it up, stirred it with a spoon, and then poured it into a large bowl (the pouch provides a generous amount of food)....1) The beans and rice did soak up most of the remaining water.2) There were still some dry clumps stuck to the bottom of the pouch.3) The noticeable "plastic" smell was still there (again, it might be from the seasoning ingredients).4) It tasted rather good.Additional comments and tips:1) I suggest using a long-handled spoon to sufficiently reach the bottom of the large, deep pouch to ensure everything get saturated with the water.2) Expect to add about 10 more minutes to the cook time.3) If possible, prepare to dole out the cooked contents from the pouch as it is too deep to avoid making a mess if you eat from it!4) The packs is very light and thin, making it the ideal dehydrated food item to include in your backpacks, emergency supply kits, and other ration stocks.5) I have ordered other meals from the Backpacker's Pantry and intend to try them out on my next "outside of the kitchen" excursions!I could only give it five stars due to the discrepancy in the direction's cook time. It states to double the cook time every 5,000 feet of elevation (I guess they mean above sea level). I am not very high above sea level, so I'm not sure if the recommended time was incorrect or if I really just needed to use a long spoon to give the contents a thorough stirring. I look forward to trying other meals from this brand. 4DELICIOUS!! 1st time I've used another brand of hiker's or emergency food pack & so glad I did! Check it out!LOVED this meal! My first try from Backpacker's Pantry & this was well seasoned & filling meal. Goldilocks would say it was "Just right!"Easy to make & gave it a few extra minutes cooking time to soften the beans to our likeness. Have used another brand only for years & Bacpacker's Pantry has given me hope that other meals may be worth a try. This one was enjoyed! 5Decent freeze dried food!Being from Louisiana, I feel like it was well seasoned (for freeze dried food) and relatively close to actual red beans and rice. That being said it's obviously not the same thing. But it takes zero effort to prepare. Zero clean up. And somewhat filling. Although I wouldn't plan on feeding two people with these 2 servings. That's not realistic. Almost every freeze dried meal I've had indicates what normally amounts as too much water. This was no exception. Even with 2.25 cups (calls for 2.5) it was too soupy. I'd try 2 next time. Overall a good meal rivalling my favorites from mountain house. It would be very good supplemented with sausage and peppers. Good to have in the "survival closet" for sure! 45 Stars, Perfect Flavor/Taste, Fills you up too, Honest Review that I didn't get paid for.Loved it, 2 thumbs up, great flavor alone but we added sausage cut up to it which made it even better to us. I bought more since I bought this one to try. Also, I didn't get a Discount &/or Paid for my review here so this is just straight honesty from a 35 yr old ALS Patient here in Alabama. Great experience all around. Make sure you do follow the directions exactly but it's very easy & quick to make with no loss of flavor. We added some sausage to ours but I do that with the one's we buy in the stores & it has enough flavor to it on its own because we didn't add any spices or herbs to it at all. 5Great!My husband and I backpacked for five days (six nights) across Isle Royale National Park earlier this summer (43 miles). We took two of this meal, along with many others, on our hike.It is delicious and hits the spot after a long day of hiking. I highly recommend it.As with all of the dehydrated food, we used less water than recommended, since we are at a lower elevation than it was designed for (we are at ~1200 to ~1500 ft, and they are designed for ~5000 ft in CO). Using less water concentrates the flavor a bit more and keeps the "soupiness" away, so you don't end up drinking your food at the end. 5Spicy and gluten freeOne of the toughest challenges when buying long-term food for storage and camping is finding dishes that taste good, are gluten free and come in a #10 can. Success! As usual, we used 1/4 less water and, since it's beans, let it sit for almost twice the package time. The result is a thick, spicy meal that wouldn't be ashamed to hang out in New Orleans. I can eat anything, but the family member who is gluten intolerant fell on this with cries of hungry joy. It may be a bit on the spicy side for some palates (mine), but can be tamed with sour cream. I bet sausage crumbles would be delicious too. Add some cheese and cornbread if you're eating at home. 5
